EVE Crimewatch

Case Study

Crimewatch is the system in EVE that handles everything to do with aggression, timers, criminal flags and security status. The team identified a number of goals we needed to achieve in a revamped system.

Primary Goals

  • The new Crimewatch system should be easy for players to understand
  • Players should have the option to use a safety option to guide them through the mechanics of security violations
  • The interface should be informative and effective in messaging clearly the security status at all times

The task of making the new Crimewatch system easier to understand resulted in major overhaul to the game mechanics of the system and extensive prototyping of visual design to ensure it was fulfilling the goals. It had a direct impact on the number of petitions and tickets received by Customer Support and became one of CCP’s best received feature updates. Development teams would later refer to the processes and principles applied to the Crimewatch revamp to other overhaul projects.
